Steller’s sea cow (Hydrodamalis gigas, or Rhytina stelleri) – once inhabited the coasts of the northern Pacific from Mexico through the Aleutian Islands to northern Japan. After its discovery in the 18th century, the species was wiped out by hunting in just 27 years. Chromolithograph after a drawing by Francis John, published in 1900.
