Through the existence of the State Geological Institute of Dionýz Štúr (SGIDŠ) the Institute has significantly contributed into the research of the Western Carpathians geological setting as well as to the advance in applied geological science in Slovakia. Extensive co-operation of the Institute with other geological entities in Slovakia has guaranteed quality geological information from the Slovak territory on a level acceptable to wide range of end-users of the knowledge. However, a substantial part of the information gathered in the scope of domestic projects has been published in Slovak. With increasing involvement of the Institute into international co-operation within EU-projects or under the umbrella of the Forum of European Geological Surveys FOREGS has forced the SGIDŠ management to focus in the issuing of English version of periodical, which would promptly and in sufficient extent inform the international public about the geological activities in the Slovak Republic. Since 1995 the Slovak Geological Magazine has been published as a quarterly. Besides well-established journals, Geologica Carpathica and Mineralia Slovaca, the geological public obtained wide-range information in English on the latest results of regional geological studies and applied disciplines (hydrogeology, environmental geochemistry, engineering geology, hydrogeothermy, geology of raw mineral deposits etc.) from the territory of Slovakia. However, in 2006 the issuance of the periodical was interrupted. In 2008 one monograph was issued.
Recent strong participation of the SGIDŠ researchers in international projects and in the activities of the EuroGeoSurveys have induced an effort in restoration of the Slovak Geological Magazine adjusted to new challenges of the provision of a common European Geological Knowledge Base. Therefore, by 2013 the Slovak Geological Magazine has been revived in a refurbished form. The focus is in presenting thematic information on the prominent research achievements and trends of the SGIDŠ and other geological institutions across Slovakia.
